Career Q&A: How to Recommend a Friend for a Job

Q: I am a former intern/current senior volunteer at a large nonprofit. Because I have been involved with the group for a long time, I’ve established various contacts in numerous departments, including senior staff. One of my friends wants to land an internship with the group. Because I believe he would be an excellent intern, I’m willing to contact people on his behalf.

What’s the best way to do this? Should I simply forward his resume to a particular staff member or encourage him to go through the normal channels with me a listed reference?

A: My recommendation is to take your friend’s resume and personally hand deliver it to HR or the person hiring for that position. With a personal reference from you (and the extra effort to hand deliver the resume and say a few good words about your friend), his resume is sure to go to the top of the pile.
