Career Q&A: How to Prepare for Grad School

Q: Question: I’m looking to get into a graduate program in communication studies. What are some tips i can do to prepare for the rigorous application process, and to prepare for the next phase of education?

A: My best advice to you is to start talking to people who are in or have been in graduate program in communication studies. Ask them how they got in, what they wish they’d known when they applied, etc. You can find these people by calling the offices of the schools you’re applying to, or networking (through a keyword search or putting out a request for introductions to your network) on LinkedIn.com or Facebook.

Also ask everyone you know – friends, family, professors, etc. – if they know anyone who can talk to you. I think that people who’ve actually done what you want to do are the very best resource for information, advice, tips and mistakes to avoid. Also search for websites, blogs, discussion boards, etc. about getting into grad school in general – you’ll probably find a lot of great tips.
