MFA (My Favorite Acronyms)

So, I got some flack in a recent Time.com review for mentioning in my book that I didn’t know that “LOL” meant “laugh out loud.” I thought it meant “lots of love”—guess I’m just a helpless romantic.

This got me interested in making sure I’m up-to-speed on my acronyms/IM/text message-speak. Is this important knowledge for one’s career? My hunch is that these terms will become increasingly used in the workplace as Gen Yers rise up the ranks. In the meantime, they’re making me feel a lot less uncool on my Facebook profile.

Here are a few of my favorites, plus some I picked up from NetLingo.com:

BRB – Be Right Back
DHYB – Don’t Hold Your Breath
GI – Google It
ILMURLABITIMMHAC – I Like Making Up Ridiculously Long Acronyms Because I Think It Makes Me Hip And Cool
IMHO – In My Humble Opinion
IMNERHO – In My Never Even Remotely Humble Opinion
IMHEIUO – In My Highly Exalted, Informed, Unassailable Opinion
JM2C – Just My Two Cents
MLAS – My Lips are Sealed
QQ – Quick Question
ROTFL – Rolling on the Floor Laughing
SMIM – Send Me an Instant Message
TISNC – This is So Not Cool
TMI – Too Much Information (thanks, Lisa R.!)
TTFN – Ta Ta for Now
TTYL – Talk to You Later (or, yep, Type to You Later)
UG2BK – You’ve Got to Be Kidding
WE – Whatever

If all of this is just TMI, you might like these two:

CRTLA – Can’t Remember the Three-Letter Acronym
IHA – I Hate Acronyms

Have any others I should know about? Please share!
